Puppets on the Ridge:
the Southeast Regional Puppetry Festival
July 29- August 1, 2004
Asheville is nestled among the Blue Ridge and the Great Smokies of Western North Carolina
and is known by many for its mild climate and cool summer night breezes. Summer in Asheville is
synonymous with music and art festivals, white water rafting, and endless biking and hiking trails. It is
home to some of the finest artisans in the country with galleries featuring glass, jewelry, woodwork,
weaving, ceramics, quilts, handmade papers and folk art. Local attractions include the Biltmore Estate,
the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian Trail, the Grove Park Inn, Carl Sandburg's home, the Thomas Wolfe
Memorial, the Folk Art Center, and the Grove Park Arcade. Asheville features a historical downtown area with outstanding
architecture, sculptures, and an urban trail.
We will have a special exhibit at the Asheville Art Museum entitled LimberJacks and Beyond. The mountain
region's historical claim to puppetry fame is the Limberjack and related puppet figures. The exhibit will
trace the roots of the LimberJack and follow it's path through the folk artistry of native puppeteer
Clyde Hollifield, whose whimsical inventions take The Limber Jack to another level.
The Asheville Area Arts Council will host our Regional Puppetry Exhibit fot the entire month of July
in their new front gallery. This is an opportunity for you to display your favorite works to a large public. Contact Lyon Hill if you want to contribute a puppet.
Our Saturday night banquet will be at the Deerpark Restaurant on the historic Biltmore Estate. It will
feature Cherokee hoop dancing, an old time square dance and cabaret style puppets.
Please come in and explore our website to discover the many performances, workshops, and special
activities we have in store!
